Red Bull Racing have finally showcased their 2021 contender for the Formula One season, the RB16B. This is a milestone for the team, since the RB16B will be the last one to feature a Honda-powered engine before the team shifts to Red Bull Powertrains Limited, which is a take over of Honda power units by the Austrian company.

Whilst reports were suggesting that the new car would be dubbed RB17, in line with the yearly tradition, Red Bull have opted to go with RB16B since this year’s car is an update of the older car, instead of being all new.

Talking about this unique naming, team boss Christian Horner said this to Auto Motor und Sport: “It’s the first time we’re taking a chassis with us into the new season. And because of the homologation regulations, there is also a high percentage of parts.

“That’s why it’s more honest to call the car RB16B. The next model for 2022 will be RB18. That is why there will never be an RB17.”

The car’s livery remains to be the same, with the iconic dark blue, neon red and yellow design, with subtle changes appearing to the sponsorships since Aston Martin is no longer the team’s title sponsor.

The colour scheme is one of the many things carried over from the previous car, with the RB16B featuring a subtle revision that is not evident at first glance to the sidepod and bargeboards.

Last season saw Red Bull clinch two wins, making the team Mercedes’ strongest competitor. With hopes of stability in terms of regulation, Red Bull think that it will help the team lay the foundation for a better challenge against the German outfit.

This year also sees a new driver to the helm, the third new partner for Max Verstappen in the last three years, with the team making use of Mexican driver Sergio Perez for one season (as of now)

In terms of the team’s primary driver, Max Verstappen will be entering his sixth year with the Austrian outfit after joining the team in 2016, moving up from Toro Rosso.
